Clean Out Your Fridge!

A few days ago I was cleaning out my fridge, and I realized that my fridge door is so much emptier now compared to what it looked like about 3 years ago. My family never had loads of sauces and dips, but we did have some of the staples such as mayonnaise, ketchup, a hot sauce, salsa, and maybe a favorite salad dressing. But most of that junk food doesn’t come into our fridge anymore.

What’s in your fridge? Do you have bottles and bottles of different sauces, salad dressings, or dips?

Just like how you do spring cleaning or body detoxes, don’t forget to clean out your fridge regularly.  Make sure to clean both the actual shelves and doors (with natural cleaners) as well as cleaning out the contents.

Take an inventory; check the expiry dates on bottles, jars, and containers, look out for mold growth if any, and most importantly get rid of items that do not serve the purpose.

Make sure to read the labels on these items and be familiar with what you are putting in your body. Often we ignore this step by thinking, “It’s just a small amount of sauce or dressing that I am using; what’s wrong with that?” Well apart from ingesting unnecessary calories, these products are often a medley of excess sugars or artificial sweeteners, salt, preservatives, additives, unhealthy oils, and artificial colourings and dyes which are harmful for your health.

Now that you’ve cleaned the fridge, do you really want to fill it again with all that junk food?!!

Start small by getting rid of (or stop buying): salad dressings, pasta sauces, dips, and mayonnaise. These are some of the items that you can easily make at home; save money and improve your health.  For example it only takes a few minutes to toss in some ingredients into the blender to enjoy a delicious mayonnaise or that perfect marinara sauce for your pasta. And believe me, once you start making them at home you will never look back on.

I agree Asia – it’s amazing how much “junk” is in most commercial sauces, dressings and marinades! I used to buy quite a bit of store bought salad dressings but now always make my own. With a few different vinegars, some good olive oil and spices, I’m good to go and feel a lot better about what I’m ingesting. Great post!
