Guilt-Free Onion Pakoras

Onion Pakoras are my all time favorite Indian snack food!!!

The soft, fluffy texture, and slightly spicy flavor can be enjoyed any time; with tea, lunch or dinner.

The downside is that they are FRIED! 🙁

Most often they are deep fried in unhealthy refined vegetable oils which are not best for our health. And if like me, you love pakoras and want to enjoy them often then there is a better way.

These pakoras are adapted from my mum’s original fried recipe; tweaked slightly to avoid the frying and yet retaining the same amazing taste and flavor. With a bit of change, you can still have your favorite snacks, healthy version.

pakoras (1)

Ingredients:

2 onions, chopped

7-9 heaped tablespoons gram flour/ besan

2-3 green chillies, finely chopped

1/4 tsp red chilli powder (or more)

1/2 teaspoon cumin powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1-2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

fresh coriander, finely chopped.

salt to taste

1/4 cup water

pakoras (4)Method:

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl.  Add the water in small batches. The mixture should be moist but not watery. If the mixture goes watery, add more gram flour to balance it out.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Then, scoop out the mixture onto the parchment paper, leaving some space to prevent them from sticking to each other.

pakoras (2)

Bake in the oven at 170C/340F for 30-35 minutes; make sure to turn them  half way through. Let them cool slightly before serving. Serve with your favorite hot sauce.
